FAQs
Why should I think about adding vintage and antique jewelry to my collection?
Quality and Craftsmanship
• Superior Handwork: Jewelry from past eras (especially Georgian, Victorian, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco) was often crafted by hand by highly skilled artisans. This process resulted in intricate details, delicate filigree, and superior finishing that are difficult and expensive to replicate in today's mass-produced market.
• Built to Last: The fact that a piece of antique jewelry has survived for 50, 100, or even 200 years is a testament to the quality of its materials and construction. They were truly made to last.
• Attention to Detail: Collectors often note that the back and interior of vintage pieces show as much care and detail as the front, a sign of true artistry.
Uniqueness and Rarity
• One-of-a-Kind: Unlike modern jewelry, which is often mass-produced, vintage and antique pieces were generally made in very limited quantities, sometimes as bespoke commissions. When you wear one, you are highly unlikely to see an identical piece on anyone else.
• Distinct Eras and Styles: Collecting vintage jewelry allows you to explore the stunning and distinct aesthetics of various historical periods, such as the elaborate sentimentality of the Victorian era, the organic curves of Art Nouveau, or the bold geometric lines of Art Deco.
Historical and Sentimental Value
• A Piece of History: Every piece of antique jewelry has a story and has witnessed history. Wearing a ring from the 1920s connects you to the Jazz Age, or a locket from the 1880s links you to the Victorian period. You are not just buying an object; you are preserving a small fragment of the past.
• The Thrill of Provenance: For some, the mystery of who wore the piece before and what their life was like is an irresistible part of the collecting experience.
Sustainability
• Conservation over Consumption: Buying pre-owned jewelry is the ultimate form of sustainable shopping in the luxury goods market. You are not contributing to the environmental and ethical issues associated with new mining of precious metals and gemstones.
Potential Investment and Value
• Value Retention: Unlike brand-new jewelry, which can depreciate immediately after purchase, vintage and antique pieces have already aged. Quality pieces from sought-after eras or with rare gemstones tend to hold their value, and often appreciate over time as they become rarer.
• Better Value for Materials: You are often paying primarily for the intrinsic value of the gold, platinum, and gemstones, rather than the high marketing and manufacturing costs associated with a modern luxury brand.
